Cheekwood and AIA Middle Tennessee to present International Playhouses

In Summer of 2016, Cheekwood, in collaboration with AIA Middle Tennessee a Chapter of the American Institute of Architects, will present another exciting and interactive garden installation titled, International Playhouses.

On the eve of the restorations and refurnishing of the Cheekwood historic residence, our summer exhibition will showcase five new playhouses, each inspired by and artfully designed to represent the architecture of the many international destinations the Cheek family visited in the 1920s and 1930s. The Cheek family spent many years traveling the world and finding international inspiration that would eventually lead to the construction and design of one of Nashville’s most beautiful and historic treasures.

As we look forward to 2017, and the restoration of the historic residence, visitors can plan to take a Grand Tour of their own, right here on the grounds of Cheekwood – interacting with the unique, internationally-inspired structures created to represent a city, country, or culture the Cheek family visited in the early 20th Century.

The playhouses will be chosen by a juried panel from designs submitted by area architects, landscape architects and talented artists. Selected designers will receive a stipend of $10,000 and will be responsible for construction, installation and removal of each structure. In addition, each designer will be featured in a printed brochure, press release, on the Cheekwood website, and a sign located next to their creation.

The exhibition will take place May 21 – September 4, 2016. Designs must be submitted by January 29, 2016 and winners will be announced on February 22, 2016.For additional information please contact Brian Downey, Cheekwood’s Exhibitions Manager and Assistant Curator, at 615-353-6992 or bdowney@cheekwood.org or Carol Pedigo, Hon.
