Reports to: Chief Executive Officer

Summary: Mission-focused, strategic, and process-minded leader with experience in nonprofit operations. Directing successful leadership teams towards strong individual and organizational performance in a creative environment of diverse and talented individuals.

Essential Duties + Responsibilities: Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the Chief Operating Officer (COO) will lead all internal operations including the following essential duties and responsibilities:
—Working in partnership with the Board, CEO and Staff, implement strategic planning initiatives; include new processes and approaches that support successful achievement of organizational goals.
—Serve as the internal leader of the organization
—Provide strong day-to-day leadership presence and support an open-door policy among all staff.
—Coordinate annual operational plans and budgets.
—Lead the performance management process that measures and evaluates progress in support of organizational goals.
—Oversee individual development plans and work to assure all staff are continuing to develop and grow individually, in-team and externally for, and with, the organization.

Supervisory Responsibilities: This position has supervisory responsibilities over Directors, designated Managers and as appropriate Fellows and/or Interns.

Education + Experience: Bachelor’s degree (BA) and a minimum of ten (10) years of core competency experience and/or training in operational management and executive leadership in nonprofit, public and/or private entities. Additional relevant education/experience includes organizational development, human resources management and community relations. Experience in planning and design and public-private partnerships also favorable.

Compensation: The Civic Design Center offers a comprehensive compensation package designed to support work-life balance, including a competitive base salary as well as health, 401(k), holidays, generous PTO benefits, and a flexible work week. The Chief Operations Officer position provides an annual salary range between $80,000 to $100,000 depending upon relevant experience.

The Civic Design Center is a 10-person non-profit organization based in Nashville, TN. We lead local design visioning projects focused on engagement and education around topics like public space, transportation, and walkable streets.
